AGILE AND DESIGN: TWO DISCIPLINES THAT CAN WORK PERFECTLY WELL TOGETHER

IS IT COMPATIBLE TO IMPLEMENT AN AGILE METHODOLOGY IN AN ECOSYSTEM WHERE CREATIVITY, INNOVATION, SPONTANEITY AND INSPIRATION ARE THE GUARANTORS OF THE SUCCESS OF PROJECTS?

Agile is a philosophy that encompasses a set of methodologies, which advocate teamwork, face-to-face communication and a clear definition of goals to ensure that the customer and company are aligned, thereby guaranteeing the successful development of projects.

A dynamic that minimizes the uncertainty.

The Agile methodology started out with a focus on software companies, but today it's also a very helpful philosophy for minimising uncertainty in tasks, something that characterises creative projects.

What's more, Agile champions regular deliveries and customer engagement in the creative/production process, feeding each new delivery with the customer's feedback and contributions in order to align the development with their actual needs.

ALTHOUGH CREATIVITY AND PLANNING MAY SOUND LIKE TWO OPPOSING DISCIPLINES, AT LÚCID WE FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT IN THE FIELD OF DESIGN THERE'S ALSO ROOM TO APPLY THESE TECHNIQUES.

In fact, we believe that it's vital to work towards incorporating planning into the company's routine, as it's a sector where creativity is the driving force behind the evolution of projects.

Incorporate tools that are applied in different disciplines of the Agile to have a methodology according to the reality of the company.

And although we know that we're not going to find a specific methodology, we've chosen to incorporate tools that are applied in different Agile disciplines to help us work towards the excellence of our projects.

PLANNING, AN OMNIPRESENT FEATURE IN THE COMPANY'S EVERYDAY ACTIVITY

Planning involves setting time frames and splitting up large-scale projects into small tasks. It's a very useful way to visualise and map out the execution of the project, which - supported by a good management tool - can also be a major source of information on the status of projects for both the team and the customer.

A good planning always brings more productivity.

On top of this, good planning will always lead to greater team productivity and, in turn, better rectification skills and greater time savings, turning all this into a guarantee of excellence for the completed project.

MORNING STAND-UP: WHAT DID I DO YESTERDAY? WHAT AM I GOING TO DO TODAY? WHAT ISSUES ARE HOLDING ME BACK WITH MY WORK?

Starting the day by answering these three questions along with your colleagues is a way to boost the team's productivity and concentration, as well as to prioritise tasks and increase the performance of all staff members.

A stand-up of 10 minutes a day in which all people from all departments take part is a very useful dynamic to share the status of projects with colleagues and reflect on the previous day's productivity.

It's also thanks to daily planning and the sharing of project-impeding issues with colleagues that we add to the productivity of the whole team by avoiding the dreaded multitasking, i.e. constant interruptions and project modifications that can have an impact on your colleagues' concentration and productivity.

PLAN AND EVALUATE RESULTS WEEKLY

In the case of design agencies, which tend to carry out multiple projects at the same time, the planning and distribution of team tasks are fundamental.

Work weekly classifying the tasks according to the work phase in which they are.

Assigning the projects to each specialist, estimating the time for each pending task and displaying them on the wall, and sorting them by status (to do, work in progress and work done) streamlines the day-to-day management of all staff members, which has a direct impact on the progress of projects.

It's also important to perform a weekly analysis and measure the performance of each of the projects and departments. This gives us an idea of team productivity and helps us to perform better week after week.

RETROSPECTIVE: LOOK BACK TO DO BETTER NEXT TIME

The company's daily routine, customer relationships, suppliers' delivery times, creativity, the inspiration of project members and a host of other contingencies can influence the development of projects. This is why it's very important to hold retrospective sessions with the whole team, analyse successes and detect possible enhancements.

Define improvement actions to do it the better the next time.

Thanks to sessions like these, in which all the people involved in the projects participate, a series of ongoing improvement actions can be defined to be implemented in the future.

In short, although design and creativity may not seem not to be the perfect match for order and planning, it's essential to find tools that contribute to a better organisation and management of time, tasks and people involved in the projects.

Planning, project development, analysis of results and application of ongoing improvements are the ideal life cycle to ensure agility and excellence in each and every one of the challenges faced by the company.
