The future of mobility built through system thinking

System thinking was the methodology chosen to design the future of mobility.

The most relevant companies in the sector provided their knowledge to solve the challenge suggested to the assistants.

The future of mobility was the topic that focused our last workshop for Barcelona Design Week. A trend topic characterized by its complexity, ideal to be solved through the methodology of system thinking.

The event was a success, we gathered over 50 participants and had some of the most relevant companies in the sector who delivered their valuable knowledge. Thanks to their knowledge, assistants could solve the challenge. From here we are so grateful for having all of them because, without their knowledge, solutions would not have such a level: i2CAT Foundation, Scoot, Alvic, Acciona, Factual, Endide, Busup, Ajuntament de Reus, Circontrol, Saba and Ferrovial.

System thinking, the selected methodology

System thinking was the tool chosen by Lúcid to solve an issue of high difficulty like the future of mobility. This tool is part of the Design Thinking and allows efficient review and fast decision making in complex systems.

Thus, the dynamic was organized using this methodology and made possible the co-creation and development of different points of view, giving value and analysing different agents in the sector.

In order to get a simplified view of the sector, we followed the following steps:

  • Identification of the different actors and agents in the different fields of activity.
  • Organization of the identified elements in different groups
  • Analysis of the other corners to understand the elements worked by other groups and identification of new items

A challenge to achieve: a more sustainable mobility system

Once the different groups finished with the analysis of the different sectors, we introduced a challenge: 2023 0 pollution, 0 traffic and 0 accidents. In this way, participants should develop a mobility concept that meets the requirements defined.

To sum up, we connected the new ideas with the most relevant actors of the future of mobility.

Thanks to the information taken in the corners, attendees were able to draw the map of the future of mobility by connecting the main elements of the different corners to create a visual map between the actors and the proposed solutions.

The future of mobility, main conclusions on where the industry is based according to the innovative ideas developed by the different groups.

Based on the developed ideas, we can draw conclusions about where the mobility is going: – Electric sustainable energy. – Consolidation of the autonomous vehicle. – IOT and 5G as central technologies. – The emergence of new vehicles. – Service integration for time and resources optimization. – Coexistence of private and public models with carsharing in both systems. – Extension of this model in all environments such as urban, interurban and rural. – The important role of public agents to make these new models happen.

Where is the industry going according to experts?

According i2cat on the future of mobility, a new map of uncertainty in which connectivity, integration of services, community and sustainability will play an important role.

Rosa Paradell, Innovation Business Development Director at i2cat, talked about the energy consumption in cities as “one of the challenges to build new models of mobility.” She highlighted that “the industry’s future will be marked by new ways of consumption of mobility based on the community, the autonomy of the vehicle, the integration of different services and the shared mobility.”

Resource optimization, consolidation of more sustainable models and adaption of them to new routines are some of the challenges the sector will face.

On the other hand, according to Rosa Paradell, this new model will be driven and accelerated with the emergence of new technologies such as 5G, which will improve the connection between vehicles and users and the development of more autonomous cars.

On the other hand, he highlighted the potential of 360km of bike lanes in Barcelona to offer new mobility models remarking the importance of these new models to move towards a sustainable city and reduce CO2 emissions.

Finally, Gerard Gomà, explained the main challenges of the company: the adaptation of carsharing to current personal vehicles and the creation of new vehicle models that fit perfectly with mobility trends in cities and the challenge of finding a new way sustainable model for today’s cities.
